Emerging Artists of Color

“All the world’s a stage…”

Calling all designers, technicians, directors and more!

Season 2018 Show photo

Our Emerging Artist of Color Program is designed to bridge the gap from collegiate study to a career in the performing arts. We aim to connect young, emerging artists with area professionals and to create meaningful experiences that incorporate the diverse voices that represent our community.

Our emerging artists are paid to learn with the best in their field and to participate in one of the country’s oldest and largest free, outdoor Shakespeare festivals.

What you need to know...

  1. Artists are accepted into our program through a competitive application and interview process (application below).
  2. Each participant is paired with a expert in their field to create a customized work plan, build their resumes/portfolios, hone their craft and network with area professionals.
  3. We don’t believe in the “pay-to-play” model of most college intern programs, so we award a monetary stipend to each artist we accept.
  4. This is a 5-week experiential learning opportunity. Dates are flexible and depend on each participant’s area of expertise (costume designers are usually needed prior to opening night, while stage crew is needed throughout the run). Typically, we try to pair each artist with one summer production. Our staff will work with each participant in selecting dates.
  5. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a college or university and pursuing a career in theatre, theatre education or arts administration.
  6. Interested applicants must apply no later than January 13, 2023. After we have received your application, we will be in touch to schedule a formal interview.
  7. Preference will be given to production, design and administrative artists, though all interested candidates are encouraged to apply.
  8. Program is designed for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) artists.
